The strongest technical performer on the team usually is not the one who gets promoted. Being right and being invisible is not the same as being safe.

You shipped the migration nobody wanted to touch. You caught the thing in the incident that would have taken the system down. Then calibration came, and you got told you're tracking well, keep doing what you're doing. The work was real. It just never made it into the room where your level actually gets decided.

So the promotion goes to someone with a record a lot like yours and a better story attached to it. Not because they outbuilt you. Because when the decision got made, someone in that room could explain what they did, clearly, and nobody could do the same for you.

Here is the part that stings. The fix is real, and it is almost the opposite of the self-promotion you are probably picturing. It is quieter than that. It happens before the review cycle ever opens, and it is the one thing almost no engineer actually puts time on the calendar for.

I break down exactly what it is, and why the strongest engineers are so often the ones who miss it, in the full episode.
