You can grind LeetCode for two months and still get quietly down-leveled in a room you never sit in.

If you are interviewing for a senior or staff seat, most of the advice you are following was built for the phone screen, not the debrief where your level actually gets set. So you pour weeks into problems and rehearsed answers, walk out feeling sharp, and the offer comes back a step below what you expected.

The strange part is which advice sinks. Some of the tips you would bet the house on turn out to be table stakes at best. Others you have never been told to bother with are the ones that actually move the decision.

That gap is not small. The level you accept at the offer follows you for years, into your pay and the scope you get handed on day one.

So I ranked nine pieces of common interview advice from S tier down to F. The two things engineers grind hardest both landed near the bottom, and the one sitting at the top is not something you can cram the night before. It is not more prep, and it is not a slicker way to format an answer.

The full board, and why the popular stuff loses, is waiting in the episode.
