3 Career Myths Busted
The engineer who never gets promoted is usually the one doing everything right. That is not bad luck. It comes down to three beliefs you were handed early, and each one quietly works against you.
Myth one: the reliable engineer gets promoted first. In practice, being the one everyone leans on makes you the person the team cannot afford to move.
Myth two: strong work speaks for itself. It does not speak at all. It sits in a doc the people setting your level never open.
Myth three: more hours prove you are ready for the next level. Usually they just prove you will keep doing the level you are on.
So the promotion goes to someone louder, the interesting scope goes to someone newer, and you are left asking what you did wrong after doing everything you were told to do.
Here is the part that stings. All three traps share one fix, and it is close to the opposite of working harder. It is not office politics, and it is not self-promotion either. Once you see it, you run out of ways to avoid it.
I walk through all three, and the single move that pulls you out of every one, in the full episode.
